Indonesian multinational telecommunications conglomerate Telkom Indonesia and South Korean telecommunications giant KT Corp have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a smart city project in what will soon be the country’s new capital, Nusantara.

Telkom Indonesia and KT announce MoU for Indonesian smart city project Indonesian multinational telecommunications conglomerate Telkom Indonesia, and South Korean telecommunications giant KT Corp have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a smart city project in the country’s new capital, Nusantara. Under the agreement, KT will share its ICT technologies, including quantum cryptography, cyber security and smart city solutions with Telkom Indonesia. Deploying a joint task force team, the two companies will discuss the business model for the new capital’s data centres, as well as ideas for the traffic system, the use of energy and the adoption of artificial intelligence. The rational for the new city appears to be the ongoing issues with the heavily populated (about 11.2 million) capital and its ongoing problems with congestion and pollution. Indonesia has therefore decided to relocate its capital to Nusantara on the island of Borneo, with the aim of building a new sustainable city. Nusantara is scheduled to be inaugurated on 17 August 2024, coinciding with Indonesian Independence Day. The city is expected to encompass an area of 2,560 square kilometres, surrounded by hilly landscapes, a forest, and a natural bay. Construction work on Nusantara began in July 2022. According to the Korea Herald news service, as part of its call for active investments in the new city, the Indonesian government has asked Korean companies with advanced technology and experience to participate in its capital relocation project, suggesting companies join the Korean government-led consortium, One Team Korea
