The Dominican Republic’s president Luis Abinader has called for the country’s regulator to begin tendering for 5G spectrum.

In a press conference at the Presidential Palace, Abinader said: “We want to develop a deployment plan for 5G technology and broadband unprecedented in our history, a level leap towards hyperconnectivity that will change the future of our country.”

As reported by CommsUpdate, Abinader also issued a new decree enshrining the right of Dominican citizens to access broadband technology – a pledge made to ensure that connectivity is available even in dire circumstances such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

Regulator Indotel (Dominican Telecommunications Institute / Instituto Dominicano de las Telecomunicaciones) claims on its website that “the implementation of 5G…is estimated to come into effect in January 2021.”
