Nokia has announced plans to deploy an internet gateway for a government-owned network in Iraq.

Nokia’s IP routing technology has been selected by Informatics and Telecommunications Public Company (ITPC) – part of Iraq’s Ministry of Communication (MoC) – to serve as the main backbone of the country's internet infrastructure.

The aim of the deployment, says Nokia, is to set up a smooth and secure mechanism for internet flow from tier-1 internet providers to Iraq via the country’s internet service providers.

AlAwsat Telecommunication Services Co will be partnering with Nokia to deploy the technology. AlAwsat describes itself as is an Iraqi telecommunications company that acts as a master distributor for a number of global and leading vendors in the telecommunications field.

Nokia will supply and install several of its IP routers, including 7750 SR-s, 7750 SR-e and 7250 IXR, for the ITPC network to deliver the high performance, scale and flexibility required to support a full array of IP services and functions.

Nokia’s commissioning, network design and integration services will help with deployment of the network, which will serve millions of subscribers. Al-Awsat will support this work with installation, civil works and power supply through generators for the deployment.

An Iraqi Telecommunication Ministry said that Nokia’s solution meets the security requirements of public sector and mission-critical applications, “thereby enabling us to secure the network with high capacity and high-performance protection”.
