An interesting new addition to the growing number of African countries looking at 5G is the Republic of Cabo Verde, some 560 kilometres off the west coast of mainland Africa.

This news follows the award by Cabo Verde’s Multisectorial Regulatory Agency of the Economy (ARME) of commercial 4G LTE mobile licences to incumbent operators CVMovel and Unitel T+.

The 4G license awards came after three months of network trials that began in June on the island of Sal, which, with about 34,000 inhabitants, is the fifth most populous island in Cape Verde. The regulator seems happy with the results and has indicated that operators can begin making commercial 4G services available.

But now, it appears, the government is looking ahead to 5G. ARME’s chairman Isaias Barreto has said that Cabo Verde will conduct a 5G technology ‘pilot experiment’. The trial will be carried out in partnership with Huawei, although the island that will host the pilot has not yet been chosen.

Despite the likely challenges of rolling out 5G (and for that matter 4G) to the country’s 10 islands Deputy Prime Minister Olavo Correia has been quoted as saying said that Cabo Verde wants to be among the first countries in Africa to introduce 5G technology.
