The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) said on Friday it has officially published the framework for developing 6G standards approved last month by the ITU Radiocommunication Assembly (RA).

The "IMT-2030 Framework" in Recommendation ITU-R M.2160 was approved in November at the [RA-23 meeting in Dubai](https://developingtelecoms.com/telecom-business/telecom-regulation/15820-itu-ra-23-adopts-resolutions-for-6g-space-spectrum-and-gender-equality.html).

With the framework’s official publication, ITU's Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) can now move ahead on defining technical requirements, submission process, and evaluation criteria for potential IMT-2030 6G radio interface technologies.

According to the ITU, companies and industry associations can start submitting proposals for the IMT-2030 Radio Interface Technology (RIT) to ITU-R in early 2027. Those submissions will be evaluated against the minimum requirements set by ITU-R Working Party 5D, with the objective of approving a final set of 6G tech standards by 2030.

The IMT-2030 framework identifies 15 specific capabilities for 6G tech, nine of which are derived from existing 5G systems.

Envisioned use cases for 6G include immersive interactive video, intelligent industrial applications including telemedicine and management of energy and power grids, enhanced ubiquitous connectivity, especially in remote and sparsely populated areas, expanded IoT devices and apps, support for AI-powered applications and integrated multi-dimensional sensing combined with high-precision positioning to improve assisted navigation.

The ITU says 6G is also being developed with the intention of helping address the need for increased environmental, social and economic sustainability, to include supporting the goals of the Paris Agreement of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

“By agreeing on a way forward on 6G, ITU member states have taken an important step toward ensuring that technical progress is synonymous with affordability, security, and resilience – supporting sustainable development and digital transformation everywhere,” said ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin in a statement.
