Papua New Guinean telco Digicel PNG announced on Tuesday it has successfully activated its network service on a Vodafone PNG tower under a tower and infrastructure sharing agreement signed by both telcos last month.

Digicel said the tower – which is located in Minj, the administrative capital of the Anglimp-South Waghi District in Jiwaka Province – marks the beginning of a process to grow the number of co-located network sites in Papua New Guinea.

Meanewhile, a Digicel PNG tower hosting Vodafone PNG services in Baiyer River LLG in Western Highlands Province is expected to be finalised “soon”.

Digicel said in a statement that the activation of the shared Minj site “represents a significant step towards accelerating network expansion and demonstrates how the shared use of existing tower infrastructure can improve service availability and deliver greater connectivity and choice to communities across the country.”

The tower and infrastructure sharing agreement signed by Digicel PNG and Vodafone PNG in September is one of three such agreements signed by Papua New Guinean telcos in the past two months.

Vodafone PNG signed the country’s first infrastructure sharing and co-location agreement with state-owned telco Telikom PNG in late August. Digicel signed its own tower sharing agreement with Telikom last week.
